Claudia's Guest Post - Researching ALL SHE EVER WISHED FOR.

When I was writing ALL SHE EVER WISHED FOR as you can imagine, I had a mountain of research to tackle. The book is primarily a love story, a romantic comedy in places, but as you can imagine, because a lot of the action takes place in a courtroom, it had to be spot-on accurate too.
Of course, like the rest of us, I’d binge watched just about every courtroom TV drama going and make it a point to watch Judge Judy on the tiny TV screen in front of me on the race occasions I make it to the gym. But I had to find out what a real courtroom was like for myself. An actual court of law where a jury were sworn in and then asked to make possibly the biggest decision of their lives, which would change the destiny of the accused standing in the witness box. Scary stuff.
Have you ever been selected for jury service? I haven’t, but I began by chatting to anyone I know who actually had been summoned. One friend was summoned not so long ago and ghoulishly confided that she was all excited, ‘hoping it would be a good old fashioned murder trial.’ I think she fancied herself as the Henry Fonda character in Twelve Angry Men, but I tactfully kept my mouth shut.
In the end though, she was sadly disappointed to find out it was just a dispute between two neighbours over a boundary wall, a tree and a barbeque one had borrowed from the other and never bothered returning. All of which cost the taxpayer tens of thousands to resolve in court, where surely banging their two heads together years ago would have sorted it out one way or another.
But I lucked out when chatting to a friend of a friend who was selected to serve on a jury to preside over a long-running high-profile white-collar crime case. He was obviously forbidden from talking about the case, so I didn’t probe him, but was full of chat about the ins and outs of actually serving. The day-to-day mechanics of it, including the fact that you’re effectively locked away from the world for the duration of the case, and told not to Google anything about it, or even to follow the case if it happens to feature on the news.
So what must it be like, I wondered, to serve on a high profile court case? One that everyone in the whole country seems to be talking about, and yet you’re forbidden from doing exactly that?
I contacted the Jury Selection Officer at the Central Criminal Courts here in Dublin and was astonished at the sheer amount of help she generously gave me. The thing is, when you cold call someone out of the blue, I find a lot of the time no one believes you when you say you’re an author researching a book. You’d b astonished the number of people I’ve approached who think you’re just some chancer with time on their hands who fancies a bit of a nose around.
Jackie at the Criminal Courts was amazing though. Not only was I given the full, guided tour of the courts, but I was even allowed to sit in on a Jury Selection procedure, with a judge in situ. There was I was the back of the court, scribbling away into my little notebook, copiously taking notes, when a Guard sauntered up to me and sat down on the bench beside me.
‘First offence, is it love?’ he asked, folding his arms and looking me right in the eye.
‘Ehh….sorry?’ I asked him, confused.
‘Let me guess,’ he said. ‘TV license mysteriously disappeared when an inspector called?’
‘No….nothing like that at all.’
‘Jaysus. Don’t tell me you’re a drink driving case?’
‘No, you don’t understand -’
‘It’s just, you don’t really strike me as a drunk driver, love.’
‘Well that’s a relief.’
‘Or were you a naughty girl who got caught breaking a speed limit?’
‘Look,’ I told him, ‘I’m not here to be tried at all. Honestly. I’m actually researching a book….’
‘Ah here love,’ said the guard, shaking his head. ‘Now I’ve heard it all.’

Review | Meet Me In Manhattan ~ Claudia Carroll

BUY

In a New York minute, everything can change …

You don’t mess with aspiring journalist Holly Johnson! The man she fell for is not all that he seems – because sometimes dating online doesn’t quite go to plan. She’s decided to fly to the Big Apple to surprise him and to get some answers. And if her plan works she’ll also get the scoop of her career …

But as she steps out of her yellow taxi and the first snowflakes start to fall, it’s Holly who has the surprise of her life.

What should be a dream come true is looking a little like a nightmare. But Holly is determined to get her New York happy ending!

I've just finished reading Meet Me In Manhattan by Claudia Carroll and have a smile on my face - I'm a total sucker for a happy ending in a book and this certainly didn't disappoint!

We are introduced to Holly, the main character, whilst she is sat in a restaurant awaiting her date - handsome, charming, family man Andy - a pilot no less whom has flown in to Ireland and therefore created the perfect chance for the pair to meet. Only after an hour or so, Holly has caved in, realising that she has been stood up. Andy is full of apologies and they arrange another - low and behold the same things happens.

It was at this point in the book that I thought something wasn't quite right with Andy... the story is told completely through Holly's eyes and as she told it my suspicions became more so. After Holly's flat mate does a background check on Andy to find that his IP address is in an entirely different state of America to what he had claimed, Holly decides to hop on a flight and catch 'Andy' in the act - Catfish is one of my guilty pleasures to watch on TV so reading it in a story was completely refreshing and relevant to current going ons on the Online Dating World!

When Holly finally meets 'Andy' she is shocked to say the least... Harry, the guy who not only has been arranging to meet Holly but also been emailing and calling endlessly isn't really a guy at all.. more like boy! Yes, Harry is a 16 year old who is just as shock as Holly is.

AS the course of Holly's trip unfolds, we get to know a little about Harry and his life, particularly his older, much older, brother Mike, who takes it upon himself to show Holly a good time in New York whilst she is there... It was lovely to read their relationship blossom but I was also shouting at the book for them to 'just get on with it' as they did drag their heels a little!

Mike has come as the perfect distraction for Holly as Christmas isn't her favourite time of year - throughout the book there is hints as to why this is the case but it's not until nearer the end that all is revealed.

Although at points of the book I found the storyline a little predictable, it was well written and the story kept the pages turning over. Holly was a great character who really wanted nothing more than to just be loved by someone, and I enjoyed the whole Catfish element. The peak of the book where Holly is in NYC is based at Christmas and in to New Year but I think you can read this book at any time as they are only touched on and not celebrated in too much detail keeping Catfish as part of the stories lime light.

I would like to thank the publishers, Avon, for supplying a review copy via Net Galley and paperback.
This is my honest opinion.
